The Netflix Book Tag was created by A Darker Shade of Whitney. I found out about this tag from watching Helene Jeppesen’s video. Obviously, I tagged myself. Because the only thing better than Netflix is books.

1) Recently watched: The last book you finished reading. Saint Mazie by Jami Attenberg This book has been on my TBR forever and was one of the books I definitely wanted to have read by the end of the summer. I’m happy to say I finished it. It was an enjoyable read about a complex heroine with just the right amount of ambiguity thrown in.

2) Top picks: A book/books that have been recommended to you based on books you have previously read. The Age of Myth by Michael J. Sullivan.

My reading friend knows my love of fantasy, and he has been raving about the Legends of the First Empire series. Having now read some of Sullivan’s work with the Riyria Revelations, I am very excited to continue with the world Sullivan has created.

3) Recently added: The last book you bought. The Bright Edge of the World by Eowyn Ivey. I rarely buy books, preferring to come by my reading via my local library, but The Bright Edge of the World had two factors in its favor. One, The Snow Child, which was Eowyn Ivey’s debut, is one of my favorite books of all time. Two, I’ve been traveling and while traveling, my favorite thing to do is find independent bookstores and support their business by buying a book as a memento for the trip.

4) Popular on Netflix: Books that everyone knows about (2 you’ve read and 2 you haven’t read or have no interest in reading). Have Read: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen & The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins I have always been and always will be an Austen girl. While Pride and Prejudice isn’t my favorite of Austen’s works, it’s probably the most popular. I definitely got caught up with The Hunger Games fervor just before the movies came out. No Intention of Reading: The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner & The DaVinci Code by Dan Brown I get that The Sound and the Fury is a classic, but my interest in reading VIP Dead White Men authors has been waning for a while now. Besides, I can't quite stomach dense stream of conscious writing. The DaVinci Code was everywhere when it came out, but despite it being inescapable, I have never been able to summon even the littlest of interest. This was difficult because how do you decide what books are books that everyone would know about. Do you define everyone as the bookish community or do you define everyone as including people who don’t read at all? I picked books, with perhaps the exception of The Sound and the Fury, that I feel anybody off the street would at least have heard of the title.

5) Comedies: A funny book. Furiously Happy: A Funny Book about Horrible Things by Jenny Lawson I read this book at a Panera and was so tickled by it that I forgot I was in public and cackled. For an anti-social introvert such as myself, this is quite the accomplishment. Every once in a while, I’ll remember the story of the raccoon and the conference calls, and I’ll start laughing all over again.

6) Dramas: A character who is a drama queen/king Anne Shirley Perhaps not the most inspired of answers, but Anne is the kind of girl who would name a pond “The Lake of Shining Waters”. She’s earned the title of Drama Queen.

7) Animated: A book with cartoons on the cover. I Hate Fairyland, Vol. 1: Madly Ever After by Skottie King So maybe this is cheating because I’m choosing a graphic novel. In my defense, though, Skottie King’s style is particularly cartoony.

8) Watch it again: A book/book series you want to reread. The Checquy Files by Daniel O’Malley I fell in love with The Rook, and I fell in love hard. Stilleto didn’t capture my heart in quite the same way, but this is still a series that I adore. I cannot wait for the TV series adaptation to come out, but in the meantime, I will satiate myself with rereads, both of the physical books and the audiobooks.

9) Documentaries: A non-fiction book you would recommend to everyone. American Wolf: A True Story of Survival and Obsession in the West by Nate Blakeslee I mean, is anyone surprised? Did you read my review? This book was fantastic, and I can’t imagine a reader who couldn’t appreciate it.

10) Action and adventure: An action-packed book. The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch I listened to this 30+ hour long audiobook and was on tenterhooks the entire time. This is a whirlwind of a ride from start to finish. Think Ocean’s Eleven crossed with The Princess Bride crossed with The Godfather, and you’ll have something close to The Lies of Locke Lamora. Don’t mind me, I’m just sitting over here, forever waiting for The Thorn of Emberlain.

11) New releases: A book that just came out or will be coming out soon that you can’t wait to read. Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse Recently released, Trail of Lightning is an own-voices, urban fantasy book about a post-apocalyptic Native American monster bounty-hunter. I cannot wait to get it into my eyeballs. Bloody Rose by Nicholas Eames We should all know by now how I felt about Kings of the Wyld. Was there any question that I would be eagerly watching for the sequel’s release? No, no there wasn’t. Due to release at the end of August, Bloody Rose follows the exploits of the mercenary band fronted by Gabe’s infamous daughter, seen through the eyes of a new member. I’m excited to see how Eames’s sense of humor and adventure translate to a female protagonist. Vengeful by V.E. Schwab V.E. Schwab is a prolific author with many beloved series. I, so far, haven’t been able to get into her books, with the exception of Vicious. But, oh, what an exception it was. I loved Vicious and instantly wanted to spend more time with Victor and Sydney. I’ve had to wait several years, but the sequel is finally set to release this September, and I can’t wait.

That’s the end of the tag! If you like this tag, please feel free to do it yourself in any format you so choose and tag me so I can see your answers.
