Top 5 Wednesday is a Goodreads group which provides weekly topics and you can find it here.

This week’s prompt is your Top 5 Future Classics. What books do you think will stand the test of time?

1. The Broken Earth Trilogy by N.K. Jemisin In 2016 Jemisin made history by becoming the first black author to win the Hugo for The Fifth Season. She made history again by winning the Hugo once again in 2017 for the second installment in the series, The Obelisk Gate. The final novel in the trilogy, The Stone Sky, is nominated for this year’s Hugo, already having won the 2018 Nebula award. These brilliantly crafted books have literally changed the game, and discerning readers will be reading these books for years to come, no doubt.

2. Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates One of the most searing and poignant meditations of American race relations to be published in recent years, there’s no way Coates’s book won’t show up on college syllabi for the foreseeable future.

3. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas Young Adult is a relatively new genre, and Thomas’s novel which focuses on the Black Lives Matter movement has done great work in elevating general perception about what books for teenagers can accomplish.

4. The Fairyland Series by Catherynne M. Valente Valente’s Fairyland is equal to Carrol’s Wonderland and Barrie’s Neverland. These children books are delightful and inventive and just dangerous enough. September is an unforgettable heroine, and future generations of children and adults alike will undoubtedly fall in love with her.

5. Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed Non-fiction, memoir, travel writing – these are not my genre fortes, and yet I was touched by Wild. Reese Witherspoon was touched by Wild. Lorelai Gilmore was touched by Wild. I imagine many more (predominately, white, privileged women) will be touched by Wild in the future.
